With a more developed understanding of genes and the traits each gene controls, scientists have opened doors to new technologies that seem to come from the plot of a science fiction movie. Many of these technologies spark ethical debates. Visit the following link: http://learn.genetics.utah.edu/content/tech/genetherapy/gtenhance/index.html and read about "designer babies". Complete the following:

- Identify the benefits of this technology.
- What are the difficulties involved with genetic enhancement?
- What do you think about this technology? You must support your answer.

The benefits of this technology are someday you might be able to dicide how your baby looks or even how you want to look and act when you get older. Although the difficulties are not being able to know and understand which gene controlls what. This technology can be good and it can be bad. It can be bad because they may not attach the dan to the right helix. it can be good because as i said before you can dicide what you want to look like and act like.

-way to treat medical conditions that have genetic origins
Success in gene therapy depends on the efficient delivery of the correct gene to the correct cells in the correct tissue. Once that's accomplished, you still need to make sure the gene gets to work and continues working for the life of the cell. This is not an easy task. The same can be said for genetic enhancement. If you could use gene delivery techniques to alter a person's traits, you would have to know where and how to deliver the appropriate genes.
I would not support this technology, for it is against my values that every baby should be appreciated for what it is and is given. Altering the beauty of this way of life, creation of life, is not in my favor.

One benifit to this technology would be that parents can prevent a genetic disease from being passed onto their child. Another benifit would be having a general idea of how your child is going to act as they get older. This takes some of the guess work out of raising a child. Some difficulties with this genetic enhancement is the accuracy. This technology may not always function the way it should, and you could wind up doing serious damage to the baby. Also it could cause people to become obsessed with this "perfect" baby idea and try to geneticly change everything. In my opinion I don't like this technology because their will be too much perfection and not enough differences. Also because theres always a risk that comes with anything you do.

The benefits of this new found technology are that you could possibly save your child from getting a genetic disease or disorder. The difficulties in this enhancement are that it is important that the right gene is delivered to the right cell in the right tissue. This is a very complex task to complete. Also, the gene had to continue working in the cell. I think that this enhancement is helpful to an extent. Changing hair and eye color of your baby-to-be is irrelevant. Though this experiment is desirable to most people who are going to have children, I think that it is letting technology control nature, which is wrong. This experiment is helpful to people who have genetic disorders. The enhancement could help the baby live a healthy life by escaping the unavoidable genetic disease.

the benefits to this technology is that you can almost create your own baby. you can decide what it looks like, how tall it is, its intellegence, muscle mass and other traits. the difficulties is that Scientists still know very little about the specific genes that contribute to any given trait sothat even if you knew which genes to alter, you could not predict how they would affect the individual. i think it would be bad because everyone is individual and if you use this technology it is taking that away from them.

The benefits are you can controll how a baby is going to look and it helps make sure theres no mutation or genetic disease with the baby. When doing this though you don't know how this will effect the child and this might have serious side effects and it may not be a safe medical task. I think this is mostly wrong. If your changging a childs genes to a way you would prefer that would be stupid. A person genes is what makes that person an individual. When changing there genes you changing nature you child was meant to have those cenes for a reason. When changing a childs genes you may be changing the whole childs life without even knowing it.

- I think this tecnology is good because you can help prevent sickness in your children and give them a healthier life.

The benefits of this technology is that genetic diseases can be wiped out. However there is the ethical question. If we are able to choose the sex of the baby, then one gender may be the minority. Also, all the babies will begin to look the same. Slight variations but every one will want there kid to be perfect. Also, messing around with genes could cause horrible accidents, mood swings, brain damage and who knows what else. Although there are a few ups, there are many many downs.

1. the benefits are that they can treat conditions by using gene therapy.
2. it has to do with nature vs nature even if you knew the right gene to alter you still will not know the outcome.
3. The technology is good in a way it still needs a finishing touch to make it 100% accurate otherwise you could work on something to get a specific outcome and end up with a totally different one.

Because of designer babies, people can prevent inherited genetic diseases, which is a huge positive. The difficulty is the mental difficulty, with all the moral questions. Is it right to be able to design your baby, or should you use your own genes. To me, its wrong to havea designer babies, because your baby should be whatever it is going to be. It should look like a combination of you and your mate, not what ever you want. There is a reason things are how they are, we shouldn't mess with that.

There are many costs and benefits with this technology. The technology is beneficial because it can eliminate any genetic illnesses or diseases. It can also determine your child's behavior and appearance.
There are also many complications that come with this enhancement. To ensure that the effect will take place, the traits that are wanted would have to be added to every gene, because traits are effected by multiple genes.
I disagree with the genetic enhancement. I think there is too much to risk for something that is not necessary. The baby should be born with its natural traits, because there is nothing wrong with them; especially since there is no such thing as "the perfect child"

the benefits of this is once it is created you can decide how you baby looks. problems are that you have to figure out which genes control what part. it can be good because you can choose what your baby looks like.

The benefits of this technology are that if both parents are carrying a deadly disease or even a gene that is harmful in anyway, they can make sure their child dosen't get it. The difficulties involved with genetic enhancement are finding the right gene to enhance. Then, after you find it you have to make sure the gene still works. I dont encourage or discourage gene enhancement, i think its good that we can get rid of deadly diseases in future generations. However, i dont think parents should be able to pick the height, eye color, hair color, strength, speed, and personality of their baby. If we could pick everything about our children, there wouldent be many creative people in the world. What parent would pick their child's personality to be 'Shy, and Creative.' When they could be Outgoing and Athletic.

A benefit of designer babies is that you could control the traits of the baby and you could prevent your baby from genetic diseases. Some of the difficulties of genetic enhancement is that most traits are controled by combinations of genes and how the changes may affect the individual. I kind of support this to a certain extent. It would be a good thing to prevent your babies from diseases, but if you could control every trait of the baby, then it wouldn't be considered as an individual. Some of the babies might even come out exzctly the same. Also, this technology could create human weapons which would be very creepy.

The benefits of this technology is that you can stop a genetic disease, or see how your child is going to look.
A difficulty is that you would have to make sure that the correct cell goes to the right tissue.
I don't like this technology. All people are different for a reason. This technology wouldn't support this because you can make whatever kind of person you want and it's taking away people's differences and I think that's bad.

Some benefits are that it can treat medical conditions, that have genetic origins. It also could help alter certain traits in children that are disliked and bad.
A few drawbacks would be that the results can become inaccurate and harm the baby. If one thing is done wrong the future of the baby's life could be at risk.
I think the technology is really a great advancement in science. Now we can program people to be the way that is most efficient. I also read in the book My Sister's Keeper that they used gene therapy to make an exact DNA match to their dying daughter so they could try to demolish her cancer. This caused her sister to have the exact DNA as her sister, this helped fight off the caner, therefore prolonging and eventually saving her life.

The benefits of this type of technology is that you can control how your baby will look and act towards other people around them. Some difficulties that are involved using this type of technology is that scientists have to ensure that the right genes are placed with the correct tissue in the human. I don't feel that this type of technology is beneficial because of the many risks that can occur. As a result of wrong genes being placed in the wrong places, babies can have birth defects or have problems such as down syndrome or autism.

-Parents can get their perfect baby, and they can prevent traits that they don't want the baby to have and give them traits they do want it to have.
-Some difficukties are that multiple genes conctrol different traits, and that genes are not the only things that determine a person's traits.
- I think this technology is good and bad. It is good if people could use this to prevent the passing of diseases and medical problems. It is bad because it is too abnormal, and is too unnatural. People should value the traits they are born with

The benefits are that you can change the genes that can cause disease. You can also change genes that may result in certain behavioral problems such as having a violent nature.
Some of the difficulties are that scientists are unsure which specific genes attribute to which trait and that human traits are controlled by multiple genes. Also, how your child behaves can be influenced by outside factors.
I do not support this technology because if parents tried to give their kids positive and no negative traits then there would be no sense of individuality. Scientists don't know the risk factors of changing a child's genes.

This technology may be beneficial to prevent dangerous genetic diseases that may develop in the baby. People may be able to change how their looks of their child, so they will be the "ideal" person. It may be difficult to decipher each gene in the cells. This technology is not necessary. It is unnatural and parents should not try to effect the outcome of their child
